A week after news broke that Hollywood legend, Carl Weathers had died suddenly in his sleep, his cause of death has been revealed.
According to his death certificate, the official cause of death was “atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease” and his death is listed as “natural,”
For those who don’t know, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is where your arteries become narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow through them. It increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.
It’s now come to light that Weathers had a history of heart problems however, I cannot find a single article from the past where this has been mentioned before. Perhaps I’m just not looking in the right places?
Sly’s Emotional Tribute
His old sparring partner, Sly Stallone filmed an emotional video bidding farewell to his friend:
“Today is an incredibly sad day for me. I’m so torn up, I can’t even tell you. I’m just trying to hold it in because Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success,.
Everything about it, I give him incredible credit and kudos because when he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness. But I didn’t realize how great.
I never could’ve accomplished what we did with ‘Rocky’ without him.”
Upcoming Superbowl Ad
Carl Weathers recently appeared in teasers for FanDuel’s Super Bowl commercial focused on the outcome of a live field goal attempt by former NFL star Rob Gronkowski. The final commercial will still be broadcast at tomorrow’s event, albeit not as originally envisioned.
Variety reports that FanDuel intends to make some unspecified changes to its commercial after consulting with Carl’s family. Gronkowski’s kick will take place just before gameplay starts, with a follow-up commercial to appear during the Super Bowl. The changes are focused on how Weathers is portrayed in the commercial.

FanDuel’s Andrew Sneyd said:
“The family has been very supportive that they would still like to see Carl in the work.
We need to change what we are doing in the Bowl. The live event itself carries forward and as is. Rob will kick the field goal and he will be even more inspired to make it. He enjoyed meeting Carl and found him to be such an optimistic and energetic person.
We had built a master. One is an edit if he makes the kick and we have an edit if he misses. That content we had in those masters wouldn’t be appropriate for us to do anymore. Since the news of Carl’s passing came, we have been working with editors to help us get back to something that does make sense.”
You can see Carl’s final performance tomorrow when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in Superbowl LVIII – I don’t know what that is, but I know it’s not real football.
RIP Apollo, give Mickey and Paulie our best.
