There has apparently been weeks of fevered speculation in certain quarters. Not here, but somewhere. Now that speculation can end because actor Ryan Gosling has confirmed he will officially perform his song from Barbie titled I’m Just Ken live at the Oscars on March 10th.
The song is Oscar-nominated for the 96th annual Hollywood circle-jerk. In a sea of ceremonial tedium, this bit might actually be worth watching.
Following his nomination in January, Gosling was asked about the possibility of a live performance but he said the Academy hadn’t discussed it with him. The song’s writer, uber-producer Mark Ronson, told the Grammy’s last week that nobody would be performing the song unless Gosling himself agreed to sing it. It seems like the conversation has now been had.
It could be a laugh. Possibly the most entertaining thing to happen at the Oscars since one of the oversensitive purveyors of dress-up and make-believe couldn’t quite control himself a couple of years back.
Any chance of a slaptacular repeat this year? Well some of the presenters have been announced with Zendaya, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicolas Cage, Al Pacino, Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis all confirmed to be appearing, along with Mahershala Ali, Jessica Lange, Matthew McConaughey, Lupita Nyong’o and Sam Rockwell.
What are the chances of Michelle Pfieffer and Zendaya wrestling over a joke?
Oppenheimer is the big favorite, having torn through the earlier awards this season.
