Mad Max movies are kind of a touchstone in any Outposter’s cinematic education. Even the ones who haven’t necessarily lit the box office alight are an essential part of our movie lives. However, even Mad Max could not escape the scourge of the prequel.
And they may go back once again, if Snowtown and Assassin’s Creed director Justin Kurzel gets his way.
In an interview with Collider while out doing the rounds for The Order, Kurzel revealed he has an idea for a Mad Max story set in the early days of the fall of civilization. This would be set before Toecutter unwisely crossed paths with Max Rockatansky. This would be a near-future story:
“I’ll tell you what, maybe because it was such a big influence, but I’ve always been curious about what happened before the first Mad Max – what was that world with the Nightrider, pre-Mad Max?
I’ve always been very curious about that and very tempted to talk to George about the possibility of a world that is pre-Mad Max 1 and what that is. That’s been one that I’ve always been really curious about because it was such an influential film in my time.
It’s an amazing franchise, but I’ve always been curious about those moments before that first one because it’s set up so richly. And it’s such a great time in Australia, too, that period.”
The Max movies don’t seem to resonate that well with normies, hence the disappointing box office of Furiosa and the small net loss made by Fury Road. Has this lack of return doomed any future Mad Max stories from being told on the big screen? Miller wanted to make another feature with Tom Hardy as Max, but this now all feels very unlikely.
