Retro Review: CUT AND RUN (1985)

It is now officially summer!  So, you know what that means. That’s right. It’s time for me to tell you about movies with cannibals and rape. The 1985 film Cut and Run, directed by Ruggero Deodato, has both of those things and more! Dare I say, it’s my favorite cannibal horror movie.

Cut-and-Run

Cut And Run has an absurdly complex plot for an Italian exploitation film. So let me try to sum it up as shortly as possible.  A Vietnam vet who used to be pals with Jim Jones heads up a small army made up from a cannibal tribe. He uses this cannibal tribe to raid and kill Colombian drug cartels. A reporter who has been covering these killings and trying to track them down discovers her boss’s son has been kidnapped and is held hostage by one of the cartels. So, of course, she sets off with her cameraman and a live sat feed that broadcasts everything to the studio live.

In about 10 seconds flat they get captured by the cannibal leader, who is the person she set out to find to interview. The reporter’s boss sends some mercs to rescue his son, and a firefight starts. The Colonel leader of the cannibals is gut shot during the fight and then agrees to the interview live on air, since he knows his time is short.  His live interview ends in the most awesome way possible that I won’t ruin for you.

Cut And Run is great. We get some top-tier gore. Realistic beheadings, a man torn in twain, rape, women beheaded, guts spilling out, shooting, rape, dismemberment, neck stabbing, blow darts, and more. Verily.

In true exploitation tradition, it draws from other films and the news. We get references to the Jamestown Massacre and Jim Jones, Apocalypse Now, the Cocaine Wars of the 80s, and several other events.

I really like this one because it is as much an action jungle survival movie as it is a horror movie and more importantly for a cannibal movie, there is no castration. I have yet to recover from Cannibal Ferox (Make Them Die Slowly).

I recommend this one big time. I know, I know, Deodato and real animal killings and how awful etc.  I understand. I also don’t care. These days it seems 99 percent of everyone working in every movie you have ever seen is a real-world rapist, or pedo, so in the grand scheme of things, I can live with it. Luckily there are no animal deaths in this one so no need for panty twisting.  I hope you do check it out if you like your horror movies as sleazy as they get.
