Yet more content from San Diego Comic Con. Among the chubby cosplay and the overpriced action figures, there were the panels. The DC Studios panel shared the third trailer for their upcoming Lanterns series. The trailer was released online shortly afterwards.
In a big departure from the previous movie version of Green Lantern, this series follows a darker tone, with the core of the story being a True Detective-style mystery.
It is set firmly within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, and the series takes place across two different points in that timeline – 2016 and 2026.
It follows experienced Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska. Jordan believes it is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and a huge reckoning.
The trailer features appearances from Guy Gardner, and Sinestro.
Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is showrunner and executive producer. He wrote alongside Damon Lindelof and Tom King.
Lanterns co-stars Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
Lanterns arrives on HBO on August 16th.
