In what has become something of a Comic Con tradition, the Marvel panel in Hall H at San Diego yesterday, or earlier today depending on your time zone and sleep patterns, was absolutely loaded. Like it or not, the MCU is showing no signs of slowing down. So let’s get straight into it:
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
The presentation started with the most imminent release from Marvel, and a new clip from Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It showed Spider-Man and Punisher fighting what those who were there have reported as Professor Hulk.
In this scene, Hulk gets hit with a web bomb, and Punisher shows off his shooting skills.
Then the panel was given over to an announcement that VisionQuest arrives on October 14th, and the series will close off the Wanda trilogy, rounding out WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
Avengers: Doomsday
Avengers: Doomsday saw the expected multi-cast member appearance. Robert Downey Jr, Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, Kelsey Grammar, James Marsden, Rebecca Romjin, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Hannah John Kamen, and Hayley Atwell all turned up. Ryan Reynolds was revealed from the audience in a grey Deadpool costume and some new footage was shown.
The footage confirmed that the Fantastic Four already have previous with Doom. Sue Storm speaks of this, saying she:
“…knew he was lot but didn’t know how broken he was.”
There was also a scene of Reed losing his temper with Doom and getting violent. Then there was the scene glimpsed in the trailer as Thor goes for the head with his axe, but Doom flicks it aside with ease before taking control of the fallen sentinels.
Black Panther III
Clearly the female-led superhero revolution is over, and Black Panther is cashing in and walking away. Black Panther III was conformed with yet another new lead. This time David Johnson (Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk) will take over. He will play the grown-up son of T’Challa. Jonsson was unveiled to the audience by outgoing Black Panther Letitia Wright.
Director Ryan Coogler appeared on stage to confirm he’s returning, with a December 15th 2028 release date set for the movie. T’Challa’s son was last seen as a child in Wakanda Forever.
Ghost Rider
The big reveal was the long-time coming confirmation of Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider in the MCU. He will be joined by his Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy. Disney must be happy with what they saw on that production.
Gosling has long been rumored for the role, and had hinted that he had discussed things with Marvel for a long time, from 2022 at least. Nicolas Cage played the Johnny Blaze version in two films, and Gabriel Luna played the Robbie Reyes take. No word yet on which version Gosling will play.
Ghost Rider returns some time in 2028.
