Stop right where you are! You know the score, pal. If you’re not Outposter, you’re little people. So you have no choice but to stay here and look at these new images from Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Blade Runner 2099.
As you no doubt already know, Blade Runner 2099 is the upcoming TV series set within the same future-noir world of the two movies. This story starts in a radically transformed Los Angeles where humanity is no longer in control. The replicants have won after an uprising. This was confirmed in an interview with showrunner Silka Luisa, who spoke to EW.
Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer star, navigating this world where replicants are now the power brokers of the city and humans are second-class citizens in their own world. Hmmmm, this feels slightly allegorical right now.
Yeoh stars as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner hunting a group of missing rogue replicants while approaching the predetermined end of her own lifespan.
Luisa gives more detail:
“She’s in the final days of her life, so she knows she has only days left to live because replicants know down to the day when they’re gonna die. It’s certain, and it’s definitive.”
Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life running from Blade Runners but must now pretend to be one.
The other big news is that it has finally stopped raining in Los Angeles by 2099, and future LA is warm and humid.
Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green worked with the new team to develop the project. Ridley Scott is involved as an executive producer and adviser.
The showrunner also says they returned to Philip K. Dick’s original novel for inspiration, guidance, and for additional details:
“We did return to the book for a lot of the world building. Because it’s a TV show and you have so many more hours to fill, we have this great opportunity to actually build out the world, and to go to other places, and to build out parts of history and parts of the universe that I feel like fans have been really curious about and just haven’t gotten to see yet. And the book was really helpful in helping us guide us where we could do that.”
There is a Comic Con panel later today, and this could well include a first trailer. Watch this space.
