God of War is a ‘video game’; I think that’s what the kids call them. It was originally created back in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. It ended up becoming a flagship series for Sony. It’s had 10 instalments, across multiple platforms, with more games on the way.
With it being so popular, it was only a matter of time before it became a movie or TV series. OK, so it took 20 years, but Amazon is producing a new God of War series. So far, the production hasn’t been going well. Ryan Hurst, who was cast as Kratos, was injured on set, so they needed a new actor.
That’s not the only issue with this new God of War live-action adaptation. Actor Christopher Judge, who is the second actor to play Kratos in the games, didn’t understand the strategy for the writing.

In a nutshell, Judge said that he cannot understand how they want to make live-action versions of games, but then they never hire any of the creators from the original projects.
God of War has had the same creative team behind it for 20 years. They know the lore, the characters, the stories better than anyone.
According to the IMDb, the new God of War series is being written by Matthew Graham and Ronald D. Moore. They both have some decent credits to their name, but David Jaffe, the original creator of the games, just gets a ‘based on the video game’ credit.
Our Is Not To Reason Why
Joffe has moved away from the God of War video games before the reboot in 2018. However, it would seem logical to have him involved somewhere down the line. At the very least, consult him.
Judge mentioned The Last of Us, and how it seemed none of the original creatives was involved with that. Arguments can be made for other projects; Leslie Headland and Star Wars, for example. She had as much understanding of Star Wars as I do about how my gas boiler works.

When Amazon is mentioned, you cannot help but think what they have done to Rings of Power. The Lord of the Rings is probably the best-known books of all time. The story is timeless, with character arcs, brilliant storytelling, and so much more.
Obviously, Tolkien couldn’t write the new Rings of Power series, but again, they seem to have passed it on to the most inept morons they could find. On the IMDb, the list of writers for Rings of Power is 15 people! OK, that even includes staff writers and consultants, but 15 people. Tolkien gets a ‘based on’ credit.
Two of the writers have nothing to their names; they are fresh off the bus in Hollywood and in a screenwriters’ room for a billion-dollar project. Maybe those movies about that happening are real.
Do you think Judge is right? If you’re going to make something based on a popular IP, shouldn’t you hire the people who know that IP very well?
Side Note
While looking up the details of this show, I kept finding details about God of War: Laufey. This will be the latest instalment of the game, and it focuses on Kratos’ wife, Faye. Imagine my surprise to read that a strong male character was being swapped out for a strong female character! I’ve no idea where they got that idea from, and even weirder, I’ve no idea why they went with it.

Joffe, has been outspoken about this new game, and the series. Talking on a live stream, about Laufey and the new Wolverine game, he said:
“That looks like sh*t, I’m gonna be honest with you. Reminds me of that game Forspoken.”
“Here’s the first thing I’m thinking when I watch that trailer. It feels to me like it has become a producer’s studio. Cory is staggeringly talented. He is a much better writer than I ever was. He’s a smart guy. It feels very much like he got forced into a situation where it’s like ‘we can’t give you money to make a brand-new thing; you try to do what you want, but do it in the context of God of War.’ I’m just making this sh*t up. I don’t know if that’s why it looks that way. It just feels so uninspired and so dull.”
He went on to say the new game will be “dead on arrival”. He went on to say:
“If they had taken God of War off the title, and you didn’t know the God of War story and there wasn’t Kratos, it was just a story about a goddess who died, you wouldn’t be talking about it… This looks like more of the same sh*t. [It’s] really fucking goofy, man. Nobody pulled somebody aside and said, ‘This is not God of War. ’ I don’t know what the fuck it is.
“It looks dull, it looks repetitive, it looks like it’s been there, done that. The cover is terrible. The name is terrible. It looks like forspoken. It’s got that flavor to it; it feels very uninspired.”
New ‘Creatives’ for God of War
Then I found a video of the two new creative writers for Laufey, and well, here’s the problem.
My favourite line is about how God of War (since the reboot) has always been about Faye, but told through other people’s eyes. Are there any male characters they haven’t replaced with a woman? Answers on a postcard.
