With The Penguin finishing its run in some style, completely reigniting interest in Matt Reeves’ version of Gotham City that is currently ring-fenced as “Elseworlds”, it made many wonder exactly what the DCU plans are for Batman, and what might be changed by the world building of The Penguin?
When James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of the DCU, one of the titles on the list was The Brave and the Bold, a Batman title. Gunn had previously hinted that it would be based on Grant Morrison’s comic run and would feature Damian Wayne.
Andy Muschietti (The Flash) remains set to direct. When he was asked about current plans for Batman and the DCU by Collider, Gunn was clear that things will not be rushed:
“There’s no set timeline for anything. The one thing that I’ve tried to make clear to people from the beginning, in the way that I hope we’re different, is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers. Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is. So, we have been really fortunate with some screenplays.
You know, Supergirl came in and just, wow Ana [Nogueria] did such an amazing job, the Lanterns pilot came in, and now the whole ‘Lanterns’ series came in, and it’s like ‘Wow that’s wonderful, wonderful work.’ And there’s a couple of other things that people don’t know about, a couple of movies and TV shows that are greenlit or near greenlit.
Post The Penguin, many fans simply want to see more of that universe rather than confusing things the traditional Warner Bros. way with multiple Batmen. Would the more adult-themed, darker nature of Matt Reeves’ universe place it forever with no chance of ever being integrated? Well, Gunn did make a comment that made it seem like a rating wouldn’t be an obstacle:
“It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care – whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do.”
So if this is the case, what the hell are they waiting for? Just use the Batman and save yourself $250 million straight away.
The first look at this new world is the animated Creature Commandos that lands of Max on December 5th.
