Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian, has a new movie coming out. Simply called Weapons, it has an interesting premise.
Wading through horror movies, trying to find something good, is hard work. Weapons looks nice and creepy though. Weapons stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, June Diane Raphael, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Amy Madigan and Callie Schuttera.
Zach Cregger is the writer and director, and the story is:
An interrelated, multistory horror epic about the disappearance of high school students in a small town.
The trailer doesn’t give away much, but I’m intrigued—it sounds nice and simple. The only other thing we know is that the MPAA rated Weapons R for strong bloody violence and grisly images, language throughout, some sexual content, and drug use.
Cregger is known for Barbarian, a sleeper hit from 2022. It was top of the box office in its opening weekend. Cregger started his career in the comedy group Whitest Kids U’Know.
Switching from comedy to horror wasn’t a huge stretch for him, he told Variety:
“I don’t think horror and comedy are too dissimilar. The anatomy of a scare is very similar to the anatomy of a laugh. It’s all about timing and tone and zigging when the audience expects you to zag. I feel like my time in sketch comedy has equipped me to play in this pool.”
Cregger said his friend, Jordan Peele, gave him some guidance about directing Weapons. Peele built his reputation on his unique take on horror and thrillers—Get Out, Nope, and Us have all been hits.
Weapons is due in cinemas on the 8th of Aug.
