Snyder has been talking a lot lately. Most recently, he declared 300 the gayest movie ever. With Snyder out doing promotion for The Last Photograph, he has been asked about other projects he is developing.
Talking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he gave some details on his plans for the remake of John Carpenter’s cult classic Escape From New York.
Snyder explained that he plans to have the movie still set in 1997, the sae as the original movie. This will be an alternate 1997:
“The approach is for me – the movie is going to be set in ’97. It’s from the perspective of 1981. I set the movie – the war between the United States police force and the criminal elements takes place on July 9, 1981 which is the release date of the original movie. The rest is pretty much Escape From New York.”
Most important to Snyder is maintaining the tone of the original, along with some of its commentary:
“Talk about a movie that’s the perfect combination of kitsch and camp. It’s all the things, that’s why I love it. But also, it’s [in] a way that’s satire and can get to us.
We can make comments about government and all the overreach or whatever you want to call it, the People’s Liberation Front of America, all that stuff is very … That’s in the headlines.
Snyder refused to be drawn on who he may cast as Snake Pliskin in any remake.
Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce Escape From New York for StudioCanal. Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller also produce. Carpenter executive produces, but no word yet on whether he’s getting his Casio electronic keyboard out for the soundtrack.
