World’s richest man, rocket enthusiast, and depending on where you sit on the political scale either the devil incarnate or the savior of free speech, Elon Musk elicits emotional reactions from people simply by existing.
Even a movie about him can’t have a straightforward journey to the screen,
Investigative documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney has created Musk, a four-hour long movie about the man.
Universal were going to distribute the movie outside the US… and then they weren’t.
Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, this caused criticism and led to meetings at the studio. The upshot of all this is that Universal have decided to stick with it and be the overseas distributor.
Making a statement, Universal’s Evan Langweiler said:
“The studio remains committed to releasing it in theaters internationally. We’re currently working through a release strategy.”
The film was shown at Venice this year, and Musk immediately expressed his displeasure, claiming it was a “hit piece”. Now lawyers are involved with Gibney’s production company being placed under formal legal notice.
The US rights are with HBO for streaming, and Bleecker Street for theatrical.
The question is, does anyone really need 4 hours of Musk?
