It’s been ages since we had a good killer bee movie. Of course, The Swarm is the awful Daddy of the genre. The Savage Bees is also a favorite. After a big late 1970s scare around Africanized bees coming up from Brazil, the genre seemingly died. Hivemind is in the same ballpark, but it is about wasps, not bees.
What is the point of wasps? Other than ruining picnics and acting like little bastards for the sake of it? Maybe Hivemind will answer this with some movie science!
It seems like the project is already well advanced. Ready or Not star Samara Weaving stars alongside Nicholas Braun (Succession). It is described as an “environmental thriller” and is already filming in Dublin, Ireland.
It is directed by Irish filmmaker Ciarán Foy (Citadel, Sinister 2). The story was written by Peter Gaffney (Yeti, Don’t Go in the Water) and concerns the evolution of a new breed of killer wasps and the small-town authorities who team up to prevent a deadly global outbreak. Damn scientists, doing it again.
Gaffney produces along with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Diarmaid McGrath, Scott Strauss, Macdara Kelleher, Adam Rodin, and John Keville. The project is set up at Thunder Road, Badlands, Wild Atlantic Pictures, and Amazon MGM Studios. This means a streaming release is likely.
Weaving will next be playing Emma Frost in the new X-Men movie.
