It is twenty-four years since 28 Days Later hit cinemas. Literally, WTF? It seems like only yesterday. I remember it clearly. How is this nearly a quarter of a century? Either way, the window is closing fast for 28 Years Later and that is exactly what we are going to get in time for that milestone.
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are on board and are setting it up right now. The Hollywood Reporter says the pair are reuniting for 28 Years Later, and has given more detail.
This new installment isn’t just a sequel. There was already a sequel that they had producer credit on – 28 Weeks Later. This is the start of a potential new trilogy of movies. So what will be the hook? Does the dominant RAGE virus reactivate? Somebody in a lab somewhere doesn’t know how to close a door properly? A new strain?
Boyle is attached to direct the first installment with Garland set to write all three. They will produce the whole series together. This is confirmation after years of hints and teases from the pair.
A budget of around $75 million is set aside for each installment. Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice will also join the producer roster and the project is expected to be shopped to potential buyers imminently.
The original movie was the subject of big debate – were they zombies or not? Either way, it was responsible for the rebirth of the genre which eventually led to The Walking Dead as one of the top-rated shows on television. It also launched Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris into the big time.
Expect 28 Years Later to arrive in time for that anniversary.
