In a surprise move, Millie Gibson is set to exit Doctor Who after just one season. Her turn in the Christmas Special, and her chemistry with new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, were strong. So why is showrunner Russell T. Davies changing things up?
Gibson was previously best known for UK soap opera Coronation Street. She will serve as the companion throughout the upcoming eight-episode fourteenth season of the show which kicks off in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally.
Then Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan will appear in a major guest role in the 2024 Christmas special, and Gibson will reportedly not appear in that episode. Instead, she will be replaced as the Doctor’s companion by Andor, Jurassic World Dominion, and Strike Back actor Varada Sethu.
She is already on set for the fifteenth season, which is currently in production at Bad Wolf studios in Wales.
Since this news dropped, other news has come out saying Gibson’s character is expected to only appear in three episodes of the eight-episode second season, one of them being a standalone story that fully wraps up Ruby Sunday’s journey with the Doctor. So this appears to have always been the plan, rather than a sudden change of direction.
The Doctor, of course, changes companions usually more often than he changes himself, and most only last for a couple of seasons at the most. The more fortunate ones return home, but it is not always a happy ending for those who travel with him.
No other details have been revealed about this new role. The new season of Doctor Who is again being show run, produced, and sometimes written and directed by Russell T Davies.
