Alan Ritchson will now forever be Jack Reacher, and that show has the potential and the source material to run for years and years. It turns out that wasn’t the only pop culture titan that Ritchson threw his hat in the ring for.
In a new interview with Men’s Health, as reported in Variety, was also tried out for Thor. The reason he didn’t get it, and the part of the pan-galactic space Norwegian went to an Australian? He blew the audition as he didn’t take the acting side of things seriously.
“I was like, ‘They’ll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting.’”
He says the casting people told him that the role had been his to lose after his guest starring role as Aquaman in Smallville and his Blue Mountain State performances, but they said he hadn’t demonstrated enough “craft” in the auditions.
His main competition was a veteran of the complete production line that is the Aussie soap opera circuit, as efficient a producer of talent as the British classical theater scene. Working at a high pace with multiple shoots a week, short windows to learn scripts, and block out scenes, Hemsworth was way ahead on all aspects of stagecraft.
Ritchson also says he missed out on the roles of Finnick Odair role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Dick Grayson in Titans because he was too old at just 30.
Perhaps a loss to Thor, but a gain for Reacher.
