The first installment was delayed, and then delayed again, now the second movie is also moving out. Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II is to slip by a full year. It will move from October 3rd 2025 to October 2nd 2026.
According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, those in the know at DC say the delay is related to last year’s strikes. The first movie is already two years old and this sequel was also first announced two years ago.
Robert Pattinson will return, with Matt Reeves directing again, from a script by Mattson Tomlin and Reeves. Colin Farrell may return as The Penguin, with a show built around his character currently in production to fill in the gap between the two movies.
The Batman had the second-best opening of the pandemic and pulled in $134 million domestically towards a global total of $770.3 million.
Warner Bros. is shifting its slate around with the Maggie Gyllenhaal-directed, Christian Bale-led The Bride moving into the October 2025 slot being vacated by The Batman. Barry Levinson’s Alto Nights is moving back several months to March 2025, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s as-yet-untitled project with Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn will now arrive in August 2025.
Meanwhile, you get the impression that Peter Safran and James Gunn, with their nascent DCU, could simply do without this project existing at all.
