74-year-old Jeff Bridges is confirmed to be returning to The Grid. He will make an appearance in TRON: Ares. He confirmed this on a podcast late last week, and has since been photographed reading his own script in picture that was circulated via social media.
He appeared on the Film Comment podcast and confirmed:
“I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the Tron story.”
He went on to say:
“Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.”
Until his confirmation, there had been plenty of speculation about his involvement but it was not officially confirmed.
He was the lead in the groundbreaking 1982 Tron, from Disney. He played Kevin Flynn, a man who gets pulled inside a computer, where programs compete for survival under the watchful eye of the Master Control Program. In the 2010 sequel TRON: Legacy he played dual roles as both Flynn and de-aged as villainous program Clu.
This was one of the first uses of de-aging technology on such a high-profile project and, while it showed potential, it was still very clearly early days.
TRON: Ares stars Leto as a computer program who has escaped into the real world.
Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) directs from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins co-star.
TRON: Ares opens towards the end of next year, and is shooting right now in Canada.
