Movies are dead. Long live movies. Happy Gilmore 2 “opened” on Netflix to a staggering 46.7 million views. Take that in for moment.
Let’s say that it opened in theaters. How much would that have brought in worldwide?
So I did some calculations, keeping in mind that watching something at home and going to a theater are two different things. But for a fun thought exercise, what would it have brought in?
Well let’s take average ticket price according to the ever accurate internet of $10.16. Let’s also assume that there would be two people watching per view. Sure it may be a family or it may be just a sad, single, divorcee around 54 years old. *cough*.
Ok since each person would have to buy a ticket, that would be 20.32 spent per view. Multiply that by 46,700,000 views. That would be a worldwide total of $948,944,000.
Damn.
Ok, since we’re talking about actually going out vs the convenience of staying home, let’s cut that in half. Now we’re at $474,472,000.
Seriously, theaters are dead.
Maybe this is an apples to golf balls comparison. I admit that. But really, that’s a staggering opening any way you slice it. Or hook it. (Golf puns finished.)
I just got my gears going. What do you think? Would this had even come close to that kind of opening? Or is it another example of how the streaming model is going to supplant the theater model?
