We have long suspected that the Oscars were now some kind of elaborate parody. They have to be, to be the way they are, and also to be so fundamentally out of touch with the movie-going audience. If it isn’t, then it’s just a massive self-masturbatory exercise by Hollywood, bordering on Met Gala levels of self-delusion, and we should all just point and laugh.
As if attempting to prove our point that it is all one giant joke, the Academy has seemingly just delivered an absolute doozy of a punchline when releasing the twenty contenders for the Visual Effects Oscar. These will go through to the next round of voting when the twenty will be pared down to ten in time for a December 21st reveal.
The absolute state of this list. Just look at it! No Oppenheimer, but in a clear and total piss-take Marvel’s Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is included, a movie with VFX so bad that it started a union and got a studio executive fired. Somebody, somewhere, must be doing this for a bet.
