Anaconda is a curious movie. The 1997 movie is never quite as good as it tries to be. It then collapses into the hokey. Somehow, though, it became a “thing” that spawned sequels, television movies, and even a cross-over movie with the Lake Placid franchise.
Now, under the guidance of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican, it is getting the meta treatment.
He co-wries and directs the project. This will tell the story of a group of friends who, when facing a mid-life crisis, decide to remake their favorite film from their youth.
They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals. Tropic Thunder with a giant snake.
A story yesterday in The Hollywood Reporter says Jack Black and Paul Rudd are in early talks to star in this Anaconda remake.
Black is wanted for the role of a man stuck in his job as a wedding videographer who sets out to direct this remake, while Rudd will play a former TV actor whose Hollywood dreams are slipping further away.
The report says that multiple rewrites have happened to get the tone, always a challenge with meta projects, right. Co-writing with Gormican is Kevin Etten. Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing.
Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Eric Stoltz, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight starred in the original Anaconda.
