A new TV series adaption of Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits is coming from Apple TV+. It is from the What We Do In The Shadows team of Taika Waitita, Jemaine Clement, and Iain Morris.
Now the first photo has been released by Entertainment Weekly showing the cast. It will be a ten-episode series that follows an 11-year-old history geek named Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) who is taken on a journey through the centuries with a ragtag group of thieves, led by Lisa Kudrow’s Penelope.
The cast includes Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Rune Temte, Kiera Thompson, Rachel House, Matt King, George Houvardas, Zoe Ventoura, and Charlyne Yi. The project was first announced back in 2018.
In 1979, Terry Gilliam was unable to set up the film Brazil so instead he proposed a family film. Time Bandits was co-written with fellow Python Michael Palin, financed by ex-Beatle George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and filmed in England, Morocco, and Wales. The film was released in cinemas on 2 July 1981 in the United Kingdom and on 6 November 1981 in the United States.
It would go on to gross $36 million against a budget of $5 million and received positive reviews. It was known for the number of famous cameos, including John Cleese, Sean Connery, Michael Palin, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm, and David Warner.
Gilliam would eventually get Brazil off the ground, and then go on to make The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys in his most productive career period.
