Ahhh, the Stath! A welcome throwback to the days of early 80s action thriller heroes. Filling the gap left empty since the end of VHS, bringing us the kind of movie that Sly, Arnie, and Bruce would seem to deliver at least annually throughout our youth. He has been a mechanic, a beekeeper, and now he is A Working Man.
Wonky accent? Check! Trademark scowl? Check! Punching people who have wronged him? Check! It’s all here, and it is all we need. Re-teaming with David Ayer, director of Statham in The Beekeeper, A Working Man follows Levon Cade, a man who left behind a decorated military career as a Royal Marine Commando to live a simple life working construction.
When his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.
The movie is based on Chuck Dixon’s 2014 novel Levon’s Trade. This is number one in a series of 12 (and counting) novels in the series featuring the character. This could be a franchise for Statham.
The script was written by Ayer and none other than Sylvester Stallone himself. Stallone and Statham worked together extensively on The Expendables franchise and Stallone also wrote and produced Statham’s 2013 thriller Homefront. This time around Statham, Ayer, and Stallone all produce alongside Chris Long, John Friedberg, Bill Block, and Kevin King Templeton.
David Harbour, Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, Cokey Falkow, Michael Peña, Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. Scanlan, and Eve Mauro all co-star. Here is the trailer:
A Working Man will open in cinemas on March 28th, then on Amazon Prime after that.
