Eddington has gotten a full trailer. It is the latest from Ari Aster. What wackiness will Ari bring us this time beyond Swedish cults and demon kings manifesting in Utah?
Eddington is Aster’s take on a western. He had the screenplay ready to go before Hereditary and updated it to take place during COVID. It stars Pedro Pascal (of course), Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone (who seems to be morphing into Sissy Spacek) and Austin Butler. The current premise is short and vague:
In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.
Viewing the trailer, it appears that Hollywood continues to view everyone who lives in rural areas as yokels who are missing multiple chromosomes. I just hope the movie somehow includes a preacher who drinks or is a pervert. That would be fresh!
Eddington
Eddington will be the fourth movie from Aster, after Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid.
Hereditary and Midsommar were niche hits, in that they did not cost a lot, made some money and people still talk about them. Beau Is Afraid cost more ($35 million) and did not make back even half its budget.
Does that mean Aster is under some pressure to deliver on this one? Eddington will come out the week between Superman and Fantastic Four, so it probably won’t make much of a splash in the news cycle. It will play directly against I Know What You Did Last Summer and Smurfs.
Eddington better hope the adults feel like going to movies that weekend, as well, because that is its only hope. Who else will get the tagline “Hindsight is 2020?”
One also wonders where Aster will fall on the whole COVID issue. Will he pick a side? Will he leave it up to the audience? It will be interesting to find out.
A24 is producing the movie. Eddington will be in theatres July 18.
