As per usual, there wasn’t much new to watch this weekend, but then Sympathy for the Devil showed up and it had Nic Cage in it. Bingo! Here is my review.
The movie stars Cage and Joel Kinnaman, with a few other players, but it’s mostly the two of them in a car.
The Story
The story of Sympathy for the Devil is nice and simple.
After being forced to drive a mysterious passenger at gunpoint, a man finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse where it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
That’s pretty much it. We find The Driver, played by Kinnaman, on his way to the hospital to see his child being born. He’s on the phone and saying he will be there shortly. He stops in a car park and spots Nic Cage, who walks over to him and gets in his car.
The driver tells him he’s not a Uber, but Cage pulls out a gun. The rest of the story tells who the driver is, who the passenger is, and why this is happening. I won’t spoil it as it was nicely satisfying at the end.
It’s one of those simple movies, where characters are allowed to just slowly expand as the story goes on. I will say that I was a little disappointed that it didn’t go in the direction I was hoping, but that is a minor quibble. This was a fun movie.
Overall
This is a short and sweet review of Sympathy for the Devil as it’s direct and only 90 minutes long. As the journey goes on, the more you learn about the two protagonists and the more involved you get with them.
What is excellent is Nic Cage just being Nic Cage. He is chewing the scenery in places and loving it. It’s a Nic Cage movie, but that’s not a bad thing. I could watch him read the phone book and it would still be amazing. I have said, many times, I like movies that involve very few characters, in a confined place. Sympathy for the Devil is like that, the first two acts are in a single car. It’s just Cage and Kinnaman, doing an excellent job of engaging you.
Sympathy for the Devil is on streaming and I’m giving it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It’s not perfect, but it is an excellent way to spend 90 minutes.
