After five years since the last Cloverfield movie, we finally have news about the franchise’s fourth installment. Director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Prey) confirms Cloverfield 4 is a direct sequel to the 2008 original. I don’t know about you guys but I absolutely love the original so I’m pretty excited about this!
As expected Cloverfield 4 is continuing the franchise’s tradition of keeping hush about the actual storyline and is shrouded in mystery. However, word on the street is that the film is being penned by screenwriter Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project, The Ritual, and will be directed by Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow). It has been revealed that Cloverfield 2 will not be shot in the found footage style
Explaining to Den of Geek, Dan said:
“Ours is more a true sequel than I think what happened with 10 Cloverfield Lane and with Cloverfield Paradox. I think they were existing scripts that were retconned. We’ve started out being like, let’s write a Cloverfield sequel. So it’s about the first Cloverfield movie and then ours. And it’s following on.”
The big question is, did David and Beth miraculously survive, or did that big-arsed monster eat them up and move on? Is Cloverfield set 15 years after the original and we will see the aftermath of the first movie, will it transport us back to 2008 and pick up where it left off? How does it fit in with the events of Lane and Paradox? I need answers damn it, I need them!
10 Cloverfield Lane Sequel
Talking of sequels to sequels, Trachtenberg also revealed that he and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have also discussed ideas for a direct sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane. For those who don’t recall, at the end, we last saw Winstead heading toward a gigantic spaceship where it appears an alien invasion had taken place.
“The upcoming sequel is to the original Cloverfield. But for our film, I would still totally be open to it. I think Mary would. … We talked a little bit in like ‘what if’ scenarios. And then I was pulled, all the filmmakers were sort of pulled into other things. But I would still consider it. There’s a lot that would be in the genre that that would be in, but you never know. The sequel they’re making is very cool.”
Though it has been reported that the script for Cloverfield 4 (and maybe Cloverfield 5) is finished and the film is in production, there is still no official release date for the movie. Hurry up, I need these movies projected into my eyeballs.
