Review: GET AWAY

Straight from the category marked “I’ve not heard of that”, I stumbled across Get Away the other day on Shudder. It starred Nick Frost, so I thought I would check it out. In a nutshell, it was rather entertaining.

Get Away stars Frost, Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft, Jouko Ahola, Eero, Massie Ayres, Anitta Suikkari, and Ville Virtanen. Steffen Haars directs with Frost penning the script.

I like Frost from his early days in Spaced, alongside Simon Pegg. He’s been in things like Attack the Block, Fighting with My Family, and most recently, Timestalker. I prefer him over Pegg, since Pegg is now a Hollywood sellout, defending modern Star Wars and hanging out with Tom Cruise.

The Story

The official synopsis for Get Away says:

A family’s vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they’re on is inhabited by a serial killer.

This isn’t all that accurate, to be honest. Richard (Frost), Susan (Bea), and their two grown-up kids are going on holiday on a remote island in Sweden. The island has a particular tradition of a play, all about the English treating them badly and the villagers killing them all.

It turns out that Susan’s family is historically descended from one of the British that was killed by the villagers. From the outset, all the locals tell them not to go to the island and just go home, but wouldn’t you know it, they don’t listen.

When they arrive, the locals aren’t keen to see them. They stay in an AirBnB of a local man. They should have Listened as the first evening, the locals surround the house, chant, and throw a dead animal on the porch.

I won’t spoil the rest of the story, but I wouldn’t say there is a serial killer in it, as such.

The Cast

Frost’s sense of comic timing is spot on and he’s a fine actor when given the chance. He’s not big on his writing but has done some good stuff. There was a series in the UK, called Truth Seekers, which was like a comical version of The X Files and pretty good fun.

I love Aisling Bea, she’s known as a comic over here in the UK and I’ve always had a soft spot for her. I think it’s the Irish accent, I just love it. She’s done some bigger movies, but never really had a breakthrough role. She was in Home Sweet, Home Alone, which was a bloody awful movie!

Overall

Despite the official synopsis of Get Away not feeling all that accurate, I still enjoyed it. Are people going to die? Yes, this is a slasher movie, but it wasn’t really what I was expecting. When it comes to Shudder, I find most of their stuff is straight-to-video crap. When I see their logo, I tend to lose a little hope of what I’m going to watch.

Despite my preconceptions, Get Away isn’t a bad movie. It’s a very dark comedy which ramps up at the end. I found that the first two acts did drag on a little, but then the third act was rather good fun. It was odd, as I stopped the movie just before the third act to do some work. I wasn’t going to go back to it, but I’m glad I did finish it.

There’s nothing outstanding here, but Get Away is a good, old-fashioned slasher, with a good third act. If you fancy a giggle for 90 minutes, you can’t go too wrong with it.
