The original Boondock Saints are back, Normal Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery will reprise their roles in a new movie. There was a sequel, The Boondock Saints: Where’s Me Lucky Charms, I mean, All Saints Day, in 2009. I can’t say I’ve seen it, but it’s not got very good reviews anywhere.
This third movie will be more of a reimagining, seeing the MacManus brothers, Murphy and Connor, looking for new Saints.
Troy Duffy directed the first two movies but won’t be back for this third instalment. According to Deadline, he has been writing a series of books, expanding on the Boondocks universe. The production team from John Wick, Thunder Road, will be producing the new movie. Basil Iwanyk (yeah, I read that wrong as well) said:
“When we were given the opportunity to help bring the MacManus brothers back to the screen, we jumped at the chance. The unique possibility of building on the iconic mythology and characters for all the long-time fans of the series, as well as opening it up to a whole new generation, is one that we couldn’t be more excited about.”
When he says “a whole new generation” I hope he doesn’t mean “a modern audience”.
The original 1999 movie gained a cult following after it was critically slammed and only managed to make about $30,000 at the box office. It was made with a budget of $6,000,000. That’s an awful lot of zeroes to be missing. The sequel, Boondock Saints: T’be Sure T’be Sure, I mean, All Saints Day, did a little better, at just over $10 million.
Personally, I have seen the first Boondock Saints, but I couldn’t tell you much about it. There’s lots of swearing and violence, that’s about it. Are you a fan?
