The writer’s strike has been brought to an end, and now the actor’s union SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are set to meet for bargaining on Monday, October 2nd. It seems things may end soon, so everyone has to get back to work. As we reported earlier in the week, that much is easier said than done.
So Hollywood is trying to mobilize to have everything lined up and ship shape so they can press the “go” button and get moving without delay if there is a breakthrough.
There will be a fight for talent, schedule, studio space, location services, and VFX capacity among other things. There will be a giant planning exercise and studios will have to co-operate.
Variety is reporting that movies that were mid-production and were halted will be given priority and will aim to return to production the minute the SAG strike clears. Deadpool 3, Beetlejuice 2, Gladiator 2, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, and Twisters fit into this category.
Next will be projects with set scripts and previously booked shoots, so things like Superman: Legacy. With the writer’s strike over, the next tranche will start work again on the scripts immediately. So Fast X Part 2 and The Batman 2 will make progress.
On television, late-night comedy and talk shows are going to return as early as next week. Outside these, the big-budget and long-tail items will be prioritized for restart, so shows such as House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, season 2 of The Last Of Us.
The report also suggests that studios want to keep 2024 production budgets at a lower level, so shows that were killed off in the strikes are unlikely to be resurrected.
