Netflix has finally released their trailer for the new live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender and it looks very faithful to the anime show. This is not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalananalananan’s much-loathed 2010 theatrical release.
For those who don’t know, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon show The Last Airbender. It’s a story about four nations that once lived harmoniously alongside one another, each ruled by a different element – air, fire, water, and earth.
Some people have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the elements corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts. These people are called Benders, and if you lived in the UK, you would find this highly amusing (see below). Anyway, after an attack by the Fire Nation, all hope to restore peace rests on the king daddy of benders, Aang who can control all the elements.
The Official Synopsis
Netflix has released the blurb that gives much more credit to this fantastic story than I could ever do. Also, they don’t snigger like a child every time these people are referred to as Benders.
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world.
With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope. But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang, a young Air Nomad — and the last of his kind — reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar.
Alongside his newfound friends Sokka and Katara, siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai. But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way.
Ang the Bender and his Bender mates will premiere the first eight episodes sometime in 2024.
