Michael Mann just confirmed to Deadline that Heat 2 will indeed be his next movie… Shawn T, stop touching yourself!
Speaking onstage at something called Contenders London about his latest movie, Ferrari, Mann was asked whether the novel adaptation of Heat 2 would be his next movie project and he replied:
“Yes. Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”
There have long been rumours of Austin Butler taking on Kilmer’s role of Chris Shiherlis, and Adam Driver playing the young Neil McCauley previously played by De Niro. Mann said very little to discourage those rumors about Driver:
“Perhaps. We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire (on Ferrari). We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”
Adam Driver would certainly look the part as a younger De Niro, especially when sporting a goat (ee) like below…
What Is Heat 2 About?
I’m kind of on my own today Outposters, holding the LMO fort whilst everyone else is off glavanting at some work event and whatnot. I’m also a working man so you’ll forgive me if I rely on the power of copy and paste to tell you exactly what Heat 2 is about.
Described by Michael Mann as both a prequel and sequel to the renowned, critically acclaimed film of the same name, Heat 2 covers the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Oscar winner Al Pacino) and elite criminals Neil McCauley (Oscar winner Robert De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), and Nate (Oscar winner Jon Voight), and features the same extraordinary ambition, scope, rich characterizations, and attention to detail as the epic film.
This new story leads up to the events of the film and then moves beyond it, featuring new characters on both sides of the law, new high-line heists, and breathtakingly cinematic action sequences. Ranging from the streets of L.A. to the inner sancta of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay to a massive drug cartel money-laundering operation just over the border in Mexico, HEAT 2 illuminates the dangerous workings of international crime organizations and the agents who pursue them as it provides a full-blooded portrait of the men and women who inhabit both worlds.
Not so long ago, Outposter ToughGuyRizzo sent us a review of the book which you can read here. So there you have it. Heat 2 is a go and next on Michael Mann’s slate. I think they are missing a trick by not calling it Two Hot. I’m out of here!
