SUPERGIRL Doesn’t Soar At Box Office

Toy Story 5  remained in top spot on its second weekend with another $70 million domestically and $90 million overseas. This means it is heading for $585 million in a little over a week.

It is slaying all before it. This means bad news for Supergirl. The DCU entry has come in below expectations, and way below the more optimistic projections that were flying around last week.

For context, it is in the territory of Joker: Folie a Deux and The Marvels.

Obsession remained in third with $9.8 million domestic.

Fourth was Jackass: Best and Last which pulled in $8.4 million, a low for that franchise whose core audience probably ow had bad knees and a kidney stone.

Disclosure Day rounded out the top five with $7.8 million.

So what have DC Studios said about Supergirl?  It grabbed $68 million worldwide, including the $38 million domestic.

It had been said that the movie needed to make just $300 million to break even, due to cost controls and a large number of commercial tie-ins to keep the marketing spend very low.

A report in the The Wrap says that even this number may even be a stretch for it now.

Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, has spoken to the New York Times and said this doesn’t cause panic, they are confident in their plans:

“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

It definitely won’t be getting a sequel, we are betting. Supergirl will now, undoubtedly, appear in only other heroes movies.

Expect Batman and Wonder Woman announcements soon as DC circles back to the core trio, as usual.

What is really interesting, or completely expected if you are an Outposter, is the audience data.

59% of the audience was male and 65% aged over 25. So the mystical young female audience simply didn’t turn up… at all. Again.

Sigh. Hollywood, we have talked about this before, haven’t we? We even wrote you a guide as to why.
