It is time, gentlemen and gentlewomen, to gather in the great halls and have a discussion. Debate broadens the mind, widens the waistline, and usually proves you wrong on so many things.
But debate we will as we take a stand and put forward our own views and opinions, that will stand forever, or be forgotten about by tomorrow.
Last week was Star Wars Day. We all know that the franchise in about as lifeless as an acting role by Kristen Stewart, but I still enjoyed the original movies. When people ask me ‘What is you favourite Star Wars?’, I usually say that Empire is the best one, but Jedi is my favourite one.
I can still watch and appreciate the OT and, watching ROTJ again, it made me think what true cinema is and this debate. The last 45 minutes of Jedi is, in my opinion, one of the greatest bits of cinema ever.
You have Han, Leia and droids on Endor, trying to bring down the shield generator. In the meantime, Lando and the other space squadrons are waiting for a chance to destroy the second Death Star.
With all this going on, Luke is trying to save his father and destroy the Emperor, knowing he might be facing his own death. That was the first time I’d seen in a movie, such a complex series of events, all trying to reach the same destination.
The entire ending of ROTJ is the best cinema I can imagine. Lando, flying out of the Death Star, with the flames chasing him, has me on the edge of my seat. I know what’s going to happen, but it gets me every time.
For this week’s debate:
What is the best bit of cinema ever?
I know we’ve had debates like this before, but it’s nice to review them again. What moment in a cinema did you cheer, applaud, laugh or cry, and you left the theatre thinking ‘That was the best movie ever!’?
Join the debate, dear Outposters and tell us about your best cinema moments.
