Interview With Matty Hannon

I’ve said it before, and I’m going to keep saying it, but indie movies are so much better than mainstream movies. Take Matty Hannon’s The Road to Patagonia, which we reviewed a little while back.

It was a brilliant documentary about love, life and surfing the west coast of America, both North and South, all the way from Alaska to Patagonia. It’s only a quick journey of about 30,000 miles.

Matty, the director and star, did the journey on a motorbike, with a surfboard, and sheer determination to experience real life. The documentary is really interesting, beautifully shot and just interesting.

When we were contacted about a possible interview with Matty, I was all over it. I knew he would be someone very interesting to talk to, and I’m glad to say he was! Matty lives on the east coast of Australia, so the time difference was a bit of a pickle, but we got it sorted in the end.

What an interesting and nice guy. It was interesting to hear how long it took to make the documentary, a total of about 7 years. They say making a movie is like trying to cook a steak with 20 people breathing on it.

Matty obviously knows what he’s doing behind the camera. The editing for The Road to Patagonia is spot on, especially how he tells the love story between him and Heather. Don’t be put off by that, it’s a good love story, not a forced one like most Hollywood movies.

You Can Help

The documentary is also about the conservation of the planet, but again, not forced. It shows how humans should be living in harmony with the planet. If you respect nature, it respects you.

The official Road to Patagonia page has a GoFundMe page to help build a shaman school in Mentawai. I promised I would share the link for Matty, so here it is.

Please help keep the lights on at the Last Movie Outpost, if you can spare a few bucks.
