I see a lot of movies from all over the place arrive in my various feeds. Some look good, some I swipe past quicker than a woman with coloured hair on Tinder. Operation Taco Gary’s popped up, and something about the poster just made me want to watch it.
Operation Taco Gary’s stars Simon Rex, Dusin Milligan, Brenda Song, Tony Cavalero, Arturo Castro, Doug Jones and Jason Biggs. Mikey K is the writer and director.
The Story
The story of this movie is nuts:
Two brothers embark on a cross country road trip that quickly devolves when they become involved in a global conspiracy.
We meet Luke and Danny, two young brothers who are inseparable. Well, until Danny bangs his head and lies still, while playing around. Luke’s response is to run away!
Later in years, Luke (Milligan) is older, selling all his worldly goods and moving to Canada for a new job. Out of the blue, his brother, Danny (Rex), is there and wants to join him on his journey to Canada.
Danny thinks he’s being tracked by a consortium of people because of something he stole. Luke just thinks that Danny is off his meds, but as time goes on, it seems like Danny might actually be in trouble.
That’s all I will spoil, but the story is good, and it’s funny as well. I found myself giggling a lot. It’s called Operation Taco Gary’s, because all Taco Gary’s restaurants are on neutral ground, and no one can fight there.
The Cast
I like Rex; he seems like a cool guy, someone who would go out of their way to give you a lift if you needed it. In Operation Taco Gary’s, Danny is bonkers!
He’s definitely off his meds, and you have no idea if he’s on to something, or just plain insane. I love how he keeps using the expression with Luke:
“OK, so I may not have been completely honest with you…”
And then goes on to make their situation ten times worse. There are a couple of times he does this, and I really laughed out loud.

Milligan is a new actor to me and does a good job as Luke. He just wants to get to his new job in Canada, but keeps getting sidetracked by Danny.
Doug Jones is always a nice addition to a movie, and it was nice to see him in very little makeup.
On top of that, I find Brenda Song very easy on the eye, and I liked her in this. Most of the movie she’s in a vest top and shorts, and it helped me enjoy the movie more. I’m shallow, I know, and I don’t care! It’s so weird she’s now married to Kevin McCallister.

The Real Jason Biggs
The other addition is Jason Biggs, as Jason Biggs. The consortium that is after Danny is made up of some very powerful people: the Pope, world leaders, and Jason Biggs.
At the beginning of the movie, we hear that Jason Biggs and some other powerful people have died. It turns out, Biggs faked his own death, and with good reason. He’s pretty much the bad guy of the movie, but playing himself, he’s not comfortable about being the bad guy. In fact, he keeps saying he’s not the bad guy; he’s the victim.

Again, I’m not spoiling the story, but there is a good reason he’s ‘dead’, and it is funny. Who knew that Jason Biggs was one of the most powerful people on Earth?
Overall
Operation Taco Gary’s is a stupidly fun movie! Came out of nowhere; I had no idea what it was about, but I really liked the story. It reminded me of Real Men (1987) with Jim Belushi and John Ritter. In fact, it goes to the same crazy places, not exactly the same, just crazy places.
However, I like crazy; who needs normal? I haven’t seen Disclosure Day, but I imagine Operation Taco Gary’s is like it, but with silly twists, childish jokes, and just nuts. I have a childish sense of humour, and this really made me laugh in places.
The direction, by Mikey K, is spot on. It’s very much like Wes Anderson, but not as pretentious. Shots are nicely composed, and there are little camera drifts now and then, just to highlight a plot detail or joke.
The editing is sublime in places, with some really funny cuts.
Overall, if you fancy something stupid, with a good sense of humour and just plain nuts, you can’t go wrong with Operation Taco Gary’s. It’s well-made, and I really found myself laughing with it.
Operation Taco Gary’s is on VoD.
