This morning, the entire country of England has a hangover. Pubs were open until 5am as a World Cup game against Mexico at the Azteca kicked off at 2am after an hour delay. On the way to work right now, the streets of England look like something from a Romero movie.
Speaking of national hangovers, America had its own party this weekend as they celebrated 250 years since signng the Declaration of Independence.
To celebrate this, the New York Times took a poll to ask readers which movie best exemplified the “American experience”.
The winner was Mike Judge’s 2006 satire Idiocracy. Over 3000 readers responded, and Judge’s movie won by some distance.

The film follows a US Army librarian and a prostitute who volunteer to undergo a government-run cryo-hibernation experiment.
When they awake, they find themselves in a dystopian society populated by morons.
Idiocracy was notable for poking fun at media-driven politics, sponsorship of everything, and the general decline of humanity in the face of bureaucratic atrophy.
The poll clearly did not go according to pan for the publication, as the movies that were beaten included American Graffiti, Easy Rider, and Network.
