Various outlets carrying various different variations, with different figures, on this story this morning. A week ago, Superman started to appear on very early tracking radars with estimates of up to $175 million for its opening weekend. That estimate would have placed it as the highest opening DC movie and a great outcome for the project.
Since then, it has started to appear on long-range forecasts for other box office monitors, and they are less hawkish.
Reports by everyone from The Hollywood Reporter to the Hindustan Times point to a $135 opening prediction. Deadline and NRG say £125 million to $145 million. Another report at Dark Horizons points to a $90-125 million putting it on par with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
Superman is also scoring 30 in unaided awareness, placing it higher than Top Gun: Maverick, without the really heavy marketing activity being underway. High awareness and wide early tracking prediction bands would indicate the audience is in a “wait and see” state regarding the title. This means early reviews are potentially crucial to making this either a massive smash or another DC average performer.
Interesting times for box office observers. Interesting times indeed.
Superman opens in cinemas on July 11th.
