Post-No Time To Die, and before the Amazon MGM buy-out of the creative control, there was a potential new 007 in the frame seemingly every other week. Directors were apparently chosen, and then they weren’t. Storylines were floated.
Then it all came to a shuddering halt. Amazon let it be known they wanted to move at pace. Acclaimed producer David Heyman was brought in to oversee things, and partnered with Amy Pascal to leverage her knowledge of working on Bond movies during Sony’s distribution run.
Yet the rumor mill seemingly slowed down. We know they intended to do a reboot, but how and where and why was something of a mystery.
Now, according to scooper DanielRPK (as reported by Dark Horizons) another name has emerged in contention for the role of James Bond – Aaron Pierre.
Pierre has appeared in Krypton, The Underground Railroad, M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, and the acclaimed Rebel Ridge. The British actor is having his profile further raised by being the voice of Mufasa in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and is Green Lantern John Stewart in HBO’s upcoming Lanterns.
Now, it won’t have taken the most observant among you to see that he is something of a departure from previous actors to have played the role of Bond. Leaving aside any “culture war” adjacent commentary that may develop around his potential candidacy out there in fandom, two things seemingly remain true.
Firstly, after Snow White, The Little Mermaid, the Snape furore, and countless other examples leading to things like Disney’s live-action Rapunzel having the breaks slammed on, Hollywood might be finally getting the memo.
Secondly, if Amazon did go down this route with Bond and the movie bombs massively, it will all somehow be your / our fault.
There is currently no production schedule set or potential release window communicated for the next Bond adventure.
