Bruce Campbell On Modern Horror

A little while back, I had a rant about the Modern Audience. One of my biggest gripes was about modern horror movies, and how they have become very stale. It’s not so much about the story anymore; it’s about the kills.

The rant started because of the new Evil Dead Burn movie. To me, it was as generic as they come; just gross people out = great horror. I also said that the new Evil Dead movies aren’t related to the originals.

Yes, they had Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell’s names on them, but they aren’t the same. Well, it seems Campbell thinks the same.

In a recent interview, Campbell was asked about the new franchise movies, and said:

“I’d like more humor back in. The three features have been mostly humorless, and I personally have a problem with that. There’s no point for these to get too grim. You can be scary without being grim.”

“A little more humor wouldn’t kill you. And one hero that you really can root for. Ash is an idiot, but you want him to survive.”

He’s not wrong; what made the original Evil Dead movies great was the comedy, even though they are scary, and you had a lovable character, Ash; he is groovy. He also added:

“Modern filmmakers love to color their movies like a David Fincher movie, like a hospital room, you know? Gray-green, like a garage. Garage lighting. And so, okay, it’s a choice. It’s not mine. I think even a horror movie can look pretty. Why not throw them off? Make it all look pretty and wonderful, and then let them have it.”

Finding another Ash was never going to work, but I wish that the new Evil Dead movies had more humour in them.
