The longest running, most successful sci-fi TV show in history, and they have even managed to kill that. The BBC’s deal with Disney+ around Doctor Who was much heralded at the time.
It hasn’t hasn’t worked out that way. The show seemingly collapsed in on itself, with low ratings and a commentary developing around how the show had veered too “woke” even for BBC audiences.
The show was a global smash hit again when it returned from Christopher Ecclestone through to Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.
When Chris Chibnall took over, some viewers started to find the show and its approach was moving in a direction they didn’t like.
By the time Ncuti Gatwa took over from Jodie Whittaker and a briefly returning David Tennant, the figures were heading to the floor even with Russell T. Davies back in the big chair.
Davies’ writing seemed heavy-handed with its introduction of progressive elements.
Now it seems that the show is proving the old adage of “Get woke, go broke” as Disney+ are not going to be picking up a third season after their two season commitment to the partnership ended.
DanielRPK (via CBM) confirms that Doctor Who dead at Disney, but there ongoing talks to keep it moving, possibly with an new partner.
This year will be the first year without a Christmas special for a few years, and there is currently no illustration as to when the show may return.
