Has there ever been a video game as overrated as Dragon’s Lair?
The game, famous for its movie-quality animated sequences from ex-Disney animator Don Bluth (The Secret Of NIMH) was a complete set of smoke and mirrors. It did nothing more than present a series of pre-determined cut scenes, showing next an outcome that was simply based on whether the joystick movements the player had made should tee up a success scene, or a death scene.
It was basically nonsense. Yet, somehow, it became the biggest game of 1983, as a series of children were wowed by the animation without thinking too much about what they were really pumping their quarters into.
The original game followed a knight named Dirk the Daring who must rescue the fetching Princess Daphne from the clutches of the evil dragon known as Singe and the wizard Mordroc. Netflix has a live-action adaption in the works, and now they know who they want to direct it. According to The Insneider, Muppets Most Wanted director James Bobin is reportedly in talks to direct Dragon’s Lair.
Dan and Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) have written the script. Ryan Reynolds remains attached to star and produce. Other producers will be Roy Lee, Trevor Engelson, Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Jon Pomeroy.
