The Last Starfighter is a true classic. I will die on that hill. It was a simple story, about a young man who has to learn to believe in himself to fight incredible odds. It’s a timeless story, and I love how it worked in the original movie.
I grew up loving the movie, and even had the chance to interview the main stars, Lance Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart. I am still planning on writing up a retro-review of the movie when I get around to it.
The Last Starfighter came out in 1984, and was the first movie to use CGI for all of the starships and space battles. Fine, they don’t really hold up today, but the movie is still quality family entertainment.
There has been talk of a sequel since it came out. Personally, I thought it was a ‘one and done’ movie. Sure, it was left open for a sequel, but it just didn’t need it. As we know, they never leave things alone; however, the sequel is not going to be a movie, but a comic book series from Mad Cave Studios.

The original writer of the movie, Jonathan Bethuel, is involved in bringing the comic book to life. Mad Cave released a synopsis of the sequel:
“Small-town teenager Alex Rogan has already saved multiple worlds. But that was only the beginning of his story. Forty years after the cult-classic movie that pioneered CGI and inspired generations of fans, an all-new story picks up from the end credits and takes off for the stars!
Now the leader…and sole member…of the Star League, Alex must rebuild the galaxy’s only defense force against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. Introducing a new cast of Starfighters alongside fan-favorite faces—and new killers and cutthroats in the shadowy employ of the Ko-Dan—The Last Starfighter #1 launches a sci-fi legacy to new heights!”
It might be interesting to see where the story goes, but The Last Starfighter movie should stay as it is.
