A report over at the ever reliable Dark Horizons brings the news that FX is lining up Very Young Frankenstein.
It is a comedy serial project, planned for FX, and being developed by Disney’s 20th Television.
It is said to be inspired by Mel Brooks’ 1974 Young Frankenstein. Just like with the previously announced Spaceballs sequel, Brooks is an executive producer.
The rest of the team is drawn from other comedy serial projects such as What We Do in the Shadows and Our Flag Means Death, including Taika Waititi, Garrett Basch, and Stefani Robinson.
If it gets a series order, Robinson will be showrunner, adding to his FX resume alongside projects like Atlanta, Fargo, and Adults.
Michael Gruskoff, producer on the original Young Frankenstein, will also be an Exec.
The highly rewatchable original starred Gene Wilder, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Kenneth Mars, Teri Garr and Peter Boyle. It remains a high point in Brooks’ filmography.
Young Frankenstein ranks number 28 on Total Film magazine’s readers’ List of the 50 Greatest Comedy Films of All Time, number 56 on Bravos’s list of the 100 Funniest Movies, and 13 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 funniest American movies.
In 2003, it was deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the United States National Film Preservation Board, and selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry.
It was later adapted by Brooks and Thomas Meehan as a stage musical.
The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay (for Wilder and Brooks) and Best Sound.
